Large-capacity hotels matter across Iowa because conferences, corporate events, and group travel bring visitors to the state's metros throughout the year. Des Moines serves as a center for insurance and finance, and Coralville sits near the University of Iowa, both of which support regular group travel. These hotels serve organizations of every size and industry booking room blocks, from small teams to larger groups filling out an entire property. Engine lists these hotels alongside the rest of the state's inventory, and for a stay of 9 or more rooms, Engine Groups handles the booking, while smaller stays are self-serve.
Frequently asked questions
Why book a big hotel for a statewide conference in Iowa?
A large hotel keeps everyone under one roof, which cuts down on shuttles and makes it easier to move between sessions, meals, and breakout rooms. Properties like the Des Moines Marriott Downtown (413 rooms) or Hilton Des Moines Downtown (330 rooms) have the capacity to accommodate a big group, along with meeting and event space. When you book through Engine, you get pre-negotiated rates and consolidated invoicing, so you can manage the whole stay on one platform.
What amenities do the largest hotels in Iowa typically offer?
Most large hotels have on-site meeting and event space, restaurants or dining options, fitness centers, and parking, though specifics vary by property. The Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center, for example, has 286 rooms and is designed with conference travelers in mind. Engine lets you search and compare these properties so you can match your group's needs to what each hotel offers.
How far ahead should I book a block of rooms at a big hotel in Iowa?
For a stay of nine or more rooms, Engine Groups handles the booking, and starting the conversation early (60 to 90 days out, or more for a large event) usually gives you better options. For eight rooms or fewer, you can book self-serve on the platform. Either way, booking ahead helps lock in availability and rates, especially if your dates overlap with other events or peak travel periods.
Are Iowa's biggest hotels only for groups, or can a solo business traveler book there too?
These hotels work just as well for individual travelers as they do for groups. A property like the Des Moines Marriott Downtown (413 rooms) has the amenities and location that make sense for a one-night stay or a longer solo trip. You can search and book any of these hotels on Engine, whether you need one room or many.
Which Iowa cities have the most large hotels?
Des Moines leads the list with the two biggest hotels you can book through Engine: the Marriott Downtown (413 rooms) and the Hilton Downtown (330 rooms). Coralville, home to the Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center (286 rooms), also offers sizable options. These cities tend to draw business travel and events, so you'll find more capacity and choice there.
